Most BCI teams don’t fail because their decoder is “wrong.” They fail because the decoder is frozen in time.

The Core Problem (One Paragraph)
A static classifier learns a decision boundary from calibration data and assumes the feature distribution stays the same. In real sessions, the distribution moves. Your model doesn’t know it moved, so it keeps producing confident outputs while accuracy decays.
NimbusSTS fixes this by making the boundary stateful: it treats decoder parameters as latent state and updates that state continuously as new trials arrive.
What NimbusSTS Actually Adds (Compared to NimbusLDA/QDA/Softmax)
All Nimbus “static” classifiers answer: “Given features x, what label y is most likely under fixed parameters θ?”
NimbusSTS answers: “Given features x, what label y is likely under current parameters θ_t — and how should θ_t change as the session evolves?”
Practically, you get three capabilities that static models don’t provide:
- Online adaptation: parameters move gradually instead of being locked after calibration.
- Uncertainty that evolves: when the session changes quickly, uncertainty grows (and the model can adapt faster).
- A usable confidence signal: you can gate control decisions or trigger fallbacks when confidence drops.
The Predict/Update Loop (Why It Matches Drift)
NimbusSTS runs a state-space inference loop each trial:
- Predict: carry the previous posterior forward (and widen it) to reflect expected drift.
- Update: incorporate the new observation (and label when available) to sharpen the posterior.
- Decode: produce class probabilities from the updated belief state.
You can think of it as “never stop calibrating,” but in a principled way: the model decides how much to trust the past vs. the latest evidence.
When to Choose NimbusSTS (A Decision Rule)
Use NimbusSTS when any of the following is true:
- The session lasts long enough that you routinely see performance decay (often 20–30+ minutes).
- You can’t afford user-facing interruptions for recalibration (assistive/clinical/control use).
- You care about confidence-aware control policies (don’t act when the posterior is uncertain).
Stay with a static model (NimbusLDA/QDA/Softmax) when:
- sessions are short and stable
- latency/compute budget is extremely tight
- you mainly want a simple baseline or quick iteration
Tuning NimbusSTS: Adapt Fast Enough, But Not Too Fast
NimbusSTS exposes a single practical trade-off: adaptation speed vs. noise sensitivity.
Most teams get NimbusSTS “working” immediately, but not optimally, because they tune it in the wrong direction:
- Too little adaptation: the model behaves static and drift wins.
- Too much adaptation: the model chases noise/artifacts and becomes unstable.
Two knobs to think about
- State noise (how much you allow parameters to drift between trials)
- Higher: tracks fast changes, but can overreact to noise.
- Lower: smoother, but may lag behind real drift.
- Observation noise (how noisy you assume each trial is)
- Higher: updates are conservative.
- Lower: updates are aggressive.
A practical workflow
- Start with defaults.
- Validate on a long session where you know performance decays with a static model.
- Increase state noise until late-session accuracy stops degrading.
- If predictions become jittery or unstable, increase observation noise (or reduce state noise slightly).
